Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know About PO Translator, the DeepL API, Supported Formats, and Troubleshooting Common Errors
What operating system do I need?

PO Translator is a desktop app for Windows. There's currently no macOS or Linux version.

Which file formats are supported?

PO Translator works with the .po files that WordPress themes and plugins use to store their translations, plus .pot template files. The .po format itself comes from GNU gettext and is used in many projects beyond WordPress, but this app is built specifically for WordPress projects.

Are .po files specific to WordPress?

No. The .po format is part of the GNU gettext standard and is used to localize all kinds of software, from desktop apps to other content management systems. WordPress simply relies on it too. PO Translator is a standalone Windows app built to translate the .po files used in WordPress projects, but the file format itself isn't WordPress-only.

How do I get a DeepL API key?

Create a free DeepL account, then grab your API key from the developer area. It takes less than two minutes and no credit card is required.

Is PO Translator really free?

Yes. The app is open source and requires no registration. The only limit comes from your DeepL account quota, and its free plan already includes 500,000 characters per month.

What happens if I go over my DeepL quota?

DeepL simply blocks further translations until next month or until you upgrade your plan. Files you've already translated stay untouched.

Does PO Translator modify my original .po file?

No. Only the msgstr strings get translated. Metadata, comments, and the file structure stay exactly the same, so it won't conflict with your usual translation tools.
